An unusual bare imperial portrait
Lot 2397
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Quinarius' (Gold, 14 mm, 3.00 g, 12 h), 'Derived Gordian Group B'. MHIΛ OMIИЧ Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. NOIHΛ[.]ΛMO Victory advancing left, placing her right hand in her lap and holding uncertain long object in her left. A lovely small coin with an unusual bare imperial portrait. With original suspension loop. A few light marks, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Stylistically, the portrait on this lovely small coin is closely connected to lots 2395-2396 above, however, it is very unusual in that it is clearly bare-headed. The reverse, on the other hand, is a distant imitation of a Victory-reverse.
